Differences in Student and Instructor MPL Scores

I'll start off with a question that has been challenging me: Too often students produce scores that I can't see. I have my students take each of the section Diagnostic and Exit Tests within a chapter. I have set MPL to record only their highest section Exit Test scores and then use the average Chapter Exit Test scores in the calculation of their total grade. I found this encourages students take take an Exit Test as many times as they need too in order to better master the material.

The problem is that there are times when a student has obtained a score of 100% but it only shows 88% in my MPL Gradebook. While it only happens an estimate 5-10% of the time it is frustrating. Right now I make corrections for students which can add up to a considerable amount of time. So I am wondering what could be causing this to happen for some but not all students. I only started having this problem this fall semester. Anyone have any ideas?

Gabe, Thanks again for setting up this blog - now I'll just have to remember to check in (I signed up for an Irish Language course - forget about it and when I logged in there were over 700 e-mails - needless to say, I learned NOTHING!)
I'm confused (no comments please!), you can set up MPL to record scores, etc.? I only go into CourseCompass.
Also, I can't work with Pegasus yet because it is not available at this point with the Zimbardo text - hopefully soon. In the meantime, what would any of you suggest as a first step when Pegasus is available?

Hi Mary Ellen,

What would be the first step is a great question and I am sure you will get lots of good ideas from everyone. I would begin by making a copy of the course template and naming it something like "Working Copy." I would then use this "Working Copy" to become more familiar with the features of the program by moving, copying, deleting, arranging etc. Just working with the program without worrying about any consequences helped to raise my comfort level.

And of course when you come across something that raises a question be sure to write yourself a note or open another browser window and post it on this blog. One of us should be able to get your answer plus you might give the rest of us something we hadn't thought about before.

I am sure that others may have some ideas of what they did when they first began using the program and I will be eager to hear what they say.

Hello Gabe, here is an excerpt from one of my last help requests.

"I apologize for the difficulty that you have experienced with the scoring of the post-tests in your gradebook.

The default preference is to use the last available score, not the highest score. The instructor-specified presence to use the highest score is being overridden.

We have created a change request for this issue to correct this behavior. We are currently working on an implementation date."

They are still working on it.

In the interim, if you want to see all student submissions, go in to the study plan from course content, using the arrow next to the exit test, click view submissions, and then when the grades come up, click on the "+" sign next to each student to see all of their submissions.

You can also go to Reports -> select a Study Plan -> select All Attempts

Thanks Noland, that is terrific. You put words together really good. Yours sounds so much better than my, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. Write your congressperson and quit your whining."

Hello,
I like your idea, Gabe, of using a working copy. I wonder if I can do that with the test drive course that Karen had set up before our summit. Otherwise I don't have Pegasus to work with until it is linked to the Zimbardo text. (At least I don't think I do - my brain is on hold until after finals next week!). I'll let you know how I make out. I'm sure that will give me confidence as you say - although doesn't that generally come out of a good bottle of "Irish"??
